Today, Kieran asked me if we could set up a floating and sinking tub. He had seen a piece of pumice in the the classroom.
"I know that it is a rock but it floats" he said. "Can I show you?"
Kieran helped me take the hose over to the tub and filled the tub with water. He then found a container and found some objects to test. Some other students started to help Kieran look for things. Then, they went out to the tub to test them. The first thing that they tried was the pumice.
I asked Kieran how he could record what floated and sank. We decided we could write it down. Kieran made a graph and wrote the labels 'Float' and 'Sink'. He persevered at sounding out the words. As he tested the objects he predicted if they would float or sink and then he tested them. He used the alphabet card to help him to work out the initial sound of the object and then recorded it on his graph.
Kieran enjoyed sharing his learning with his peers.
